KING WILLEM-ALEXANDER AND QUEEN MÁXIMA PAID A VISIT TO SOUTHEAST FRIESLAND

On September 17, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima paid a regional visit to Southeast Friesland (Frisian: Zuidoost-Fryslân), a province of the Netherlands located in the northern part of the country. Friesland is historically known as Frisia.

The visit focuses on the future of the province of Friesland with an emphasis on sustainability, the agricultural sector and the Frisian language and culture.

The regional visit to Southeast Friesland started with a tour of the EcoMunityPark in Oosterwolde in the municipality of Ooststellingwerf.

EcoMunityPark is a sustainable business park that focus in find a balance between economy and ecology. It covers 17 hectares.

Their Majesties visited ECOstyle, a producer of sustainable pesticides, and the Biosintrum, a project to connect companies, schools and governments that want to work together for a sustainable future through the Biosintrum innovation cycle.

These organizations are committed to, among other things, sustainable entrepreneurship and knowledge exchange.

Afterwards, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the sustainable De Deelen cheese farm, located in the nature reserve of the same name. About 240 cows produce 6000 liters of milk every day, 75% of which is used for the company’s own cheese production.

After a tour of the dairy farm and the cheese factory, the Royal Couple talked to young farmers about the future of agriculture in Friesland and the challenges of the new generation in this sector.

The King and Queen attended a lesson in Frisian at the Secondary School OSG Singelland. Later, they met with representatives of regional initiatives that want to strengthen the position of Frisian in education and in society.

Frisian (Frysk) is a West Germanic language spoken mostly in the province of Friesland (Fryslân) in the north of the Netherlands, mostly by those of Frisian ancestry. It is the most widely spoken of the Frisian languages.

Finally, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima visited the sailing school De Veenhoop in Smallingerland.

During the visit, Their Majesties sailed on board of a skûtsje, a Frisian sailing boat of the type tjalk or Dutch barge, originally an ordinary cargo boat, but today a prized ship and one of the icons of Frisia.

They watched the traditional Skûtsjesilen, a Frisian regatta with skûtsjes, in particular, the races organised by the Sintrale Kommisje Skûtsjesilen (SKS) and the Iepen Fryske Kampioenskippen Skûtsjesilen (IFKS).
