SPANISH ROYAL TOUR KING FELIPE, QUEEN LETIZIA, LEONOR AND SOFIA VISITED MERIDA

The Spanish Royal Tour continues, King Felipe and Queen Letizia accompanied by their daughters Princess Leonor of Asturias and Infanta Sofia visited the city of Mérida, capital of the autonomous community of Extremadura.

This royal tour is part of the campaign “Spain for Sure”. The campaign promote tourists to visit Spain after COVID-19 pandemic.

First, the Spanish Royal family toured The National Museum of Roman Art of Mérida (Spanish: Museo Nacional de Arte Romano de Mérida) an archaeology museum located in the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, the archaeological site of the Roman colony of Augusta Emerita, one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain.

The Museum’s content and activities revolve around the Roman period, which is the focal point of the permanent exhibition set up at its main headquarters.

Then King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia walked to the Roman Theatre, where the International Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida (Spanish: Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida) is held.

Their Majesties and daughters attended the opening of the 66th Edition of the Festival, the oldest and most important of its kind in Spain.

Leonor, Sofia, Queen Letizia and King Felipe watched a performance of the play “Antígona” by David Gaitán.

After the performance, they met with the director, actors and actresses backstage.



The visit to Mérida finished the next day, when Their Majesties and daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia left the Hotel Parador of Merida, where they were stayed.
