SPANISH ROYAL FAMILY ATTEND OPENING OF THE XIV LEGISLATIVE

Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain accompanied by their daughters Princess Leonor of Asturias and Infanta Sofía presided over the Solemn Opening Ceremony of the XIV Legislature, a joint session of the General Courts, Congress of Deputies and Senate.

The Solemn Opening Ceremony took place at the Palacio de las Cortes in Madrid, Spain on February 2, 2020.

Palacio de las Cortes is a building in Madrid where the Spanish Congress of Deputies meet. It is located on the Calle Zorrilla and the Carrera de San Jerónimo, near the Paseo del Prado.

Upon their arrival, the Spanish Royal Family were welcomed by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez and by the Chief of State of Defense Major, Miguel Ángel Villarroya.

Military honors were rendered and His Majesty King Felipe reviewed the troops.

The King and The Queen received the greeting of the President of the Congress of Deputies, Meritxell Batet; The president of the Senate, Pilar Llop; and the members of both chambers.

Afterwards, King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Doña Sofía made their way to the Congress of Deputies through the “Puerta de los Leones”, which only opens for solemn sessions like this one.

After hearing the National Anthem, His Majesty the King delivered his speech and declared open the XIV Constitutional Legislature.

The 14th Legislature began with the holding of the constitutive session on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. The Solemn Opening of the Legislature takes place once the Congress of Deputies has approved the investiture of the President of the Government that took place on January 7, 2020 and the members of the Executive have taken office before the Head of State.

Queen Letizia wore a new white midi dress with Carolina Herrera Fur Collar Cape in Black. She paired the outfit with bespoke Magrit pumps and clutch and Sterling silver signature from Karen Hallam.

Leonor opted for a tweed dress with a matching red jacket (a design that had already worn at the Princess of Girona Awards), and Infanta Sofia preferred a white dress, with black check print.
