ROYALS AT THE COMMEMORATION OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians joined by Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg attended a ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Counteroffensive.

The Battle of the Bulge, was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II, and took place from 16 December 1944 to 25 January 1945.

It was launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in eastern Belgium, northeast France, and Luxembourg, towards the end of the war in Europe.

The ceremony took place at The Mardasson Memorial (French: Le Mémorial du Mardasson) a monument honoring the memory of American soldiers wounded or killed during World War II’s Battle of the Bulge, near Bastogne, Belgium on December 16, 2019.

King Philippe’s address on the occasion of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

“Today, the struggle is still not over. By definition, democracies are more exposed and fragile than regimes that restrict freedom. We must be all the more vigilant, as deceitful rhetoric and hate speech can spread more easily and rapidly now.”

The ceremony was attended by veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and high-level delegations from the countries that participated in the battle.

Queen Mathilde opted for a complete look in red, featuring a coat with fitted belt, hat, scarf, gloves and diamond and pearl drop earrings.
