This afternoon in Kosovo, The Countess of Wessex, alongside survivors of sexual violence during the Kosovo War (Shyhrete and Vasfije) and the UK’s PSVI survivor champions (Nadine and Kolbassia) laid flowers at the Heroinat Memorial to commemorate sacrifices made by women throughout & after the conflict. The memorial is a woman’s face made up of thousands of pins – to represent the thousands of women affected by the conflict. The Countess also attended a conference to discuss the findings of UK-funded research looking at how trauma caused by sexual violence in conflict can pass between generations. Many of the women who The Countess met earlier in the day spoke of the pain and consequences of sexual violence, and their anguish for how their experiences may have affected their children. “It is our duty to continue to do all we can to break down barriers, encourage society to embrace those who innocently fell victim to others brutality and create an understanding environment which gives people the confidence that they will not be judged if they come forward and seek help,” The Countess said at the conference. Finally, at the Palace of Justice in Pristina, HRH met judges, prosecutors and police to hear how the justice system in Kosovo is taking steps to support survivors and secure successful prosecutions, 20 years on from the conflict.
