ROYAL BRIDES: KATHERINE, DUCHESS OF KENT

Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, later The Duchess of Kent, was born on 22 February 1933 at Hovingham Hall, Yorkshire, as the only daughter and fourth child of Sir William Arthington Worsley, 4th Baronet, and his wife, Joyce Morgan Brunner.

Katharine met Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, the eldest son of Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, while he was based at Catterick Camp.

Edward proposed to her with a ring consisting of “an oval sapphire with a round diamond on either side.”

The Duke of Kent’s engagement ring is pictured on the finger of his fiancée, Katharine Worsley. It comprises a large sapphire with a single brilliant diamond on each side, mounted in platinum.

On 8 June 1961, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Katherine Worsley married at The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, commonly known as York Minster.

Irish-London based John Cavanagh designed Miss Katherine Worsley wedding dress, which featured a stiff high neckline, long sleeeves, huge full skirt and a commanding train.

The Kent Diamond and Pearl Fringe Tiara secured her veil.

273 yards of fabric were used to make her white silk gauze dress.

The Archbishop of York and Archbishop Elect of Canterbury Dr. Arthur Michael Ramsey (wearing mitre) conducted the marriage service.
