ROYAL BRIDE: PRINCESS MARGRIET OF THE NETHERLANDS

Margriet Francisca, Princess of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau and Princess of Lippe-Biesterfeld, was born at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada, on 19 January 1943, the third daughter of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.

The Princess has three sisters, Princess Beatrix (b. 1938), Princess Irene (b. 1939) and Princess Christina (1947-2019).

While studying at the University of Leiden, Princess Margriet met her future husband, Pieter van Vollenhoven Jr. Their engagement was announced on 10 March 1965.

Pieter van Vollenhoven Jr was born on April 30, 1939 as the second son of Pieter van Vollenhoven Sr. (1897–1977) and his wife Jacoba Gijsbertha Stuylingh de Lange (1906–1983).

Van Vollenhoven studied law at the University of Leiden and graduated in 1965. In 1966, he performed his military service with the Royal Netherlands Air Force, and attained a military pilot license the following year.

The Princess and Pieter van Vollenhoven were married on 10 January 1967 in the Great or St. James’ Church (Dutch: de Grote Kerk or de Sint-Jacobskerk) in The Hague.

Princess Margriet’s name means daisy so the Princess chose that the fabric of her gown was embroidered with daisies of all shapes and sizes.

The wedding dress was designed by Caroline Berge-Farwick of Maison Linette who had been responsible for the gown of Princess Beatrix.

Margriet’s bouquet featured daisies. The Five Button Pearl Tiara finished off her bridal look.

The couple had four children: Princes Maurits (born 17 April 1968), Bernhard (born 25 December 1969), Pieter-Christiaan (born 22 March 1972), and Floris (born 10 April 1975).

They live in Het Loo House that was built in the grounds of Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
