Alina Maria Binder was born on 26 January 1988 in Constanța, a city on the shores of the Black Sea, in southeastern Romania.
She is the daughter of Heinz Binder, a retired airline pilot, and Rodica Binder, a primary school teacher. Alina has a younger brother, Mihai.

In 2010 Miss Binder graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies (ASE) in Bucharest with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and International Affairs.

In July 2017, Nicholas and Alina became engaged while on holiday in Cornwall in South West England.

The civil marriage took place on 6 October 2017 in Henley-on-Thames, a town and civil parish on the River Thames in Oxfordshire, England. Family and friends from the United Kingdom and Romania were present.
