QUEEN MATHILDE VISITS THE VENICE BIENNALE

On September 6, Queen Mathilde of the Belgians visits the Art Biennale 2019 in Venice, Italy. The Art Biennale is a contemporary visual art exhibition and so called because it is held biennially. The Queen visits the Belgian Pavilion.

Queen Mathilde and Artist Duo Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys

The Queen visits the exhibition “Mondo Cane” by the artist duo Harald Thys and Jos de Gruyter at the Belgian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale. The exhibition is curated by Commissioner Anne-Claire Schmitz, on behalf of the French Community. Belgium is alternately represented by the Flemish Community and the French Community.⁣

Jos De Gruyter (1965) and Harald Thys (1966) are a Belgian artist duo who currently lives and works in Brussels. They have worked with video, drawing, sculpture, installation and performance in their art.

Queen Mathilde and Luc Tuymans

In the afternoon The Queen visited two exhibitions with work by Belgian artists. Luc Tuymans’ solo show “La Pelle” (English: The Skin), which is shown at the Palazzo Grassi.

Luc Tuymans (born 1958) is a Belgian artist who lives and works in Antwerp. Tuymans is considered one of the most influential painters working today.

Queen Mathilde and Otobong Nkanga

Queen Mathilde also visited the 58th international exhibition entitled “May You Live in Interesting Times” at the Arsenale, with work by Belgian artist Otobong Nkanga.⁣

Otobong Nkanga (born 1974) is a Nigerian-born visual artist and performance artist, based in Antwerp.
