QUEEN MATHILDE VISITS BRUGES

Queen Mathilde visits Jan van Eyck exhibition in the Groeningemuseum and the renovated Gruuthusemuseum on June 16, 2020 in Bruges, the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium.



Groeningemuseum is hosting an exhibition celebrating the work of highly regarded Flemish painter Jan van Eyck.

“Jan Van Eyck in Bruges Exhibition” focuses on two masterpieces by Burgundian court painter: “Our Lady with the Child Jesus, St. George, St. Donatian and Canon van der Paele” from 1436, and the portrait of his wife “Margareta van Eyck” from 1439.

Groeningemuseum is built on the site of the medieval Eekhout Abbey. It houses a comprehensive survey of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian painting, from Jan van Eyck to Marcel Broodthaers.

Portrait of Margaret van Eyck (or Margaret, the Artist’s Wife), a 1439 oil on wood painting by Jan van Eyck. It is one of the two latest of his surviving paintings, and one of the earliest European artworks to depict a painter’s spouse.

Afterwards, Queen Mathilde walked from the Groeningemuseum to the Gruuthusemuseum via the Arentshof.

The Queen was shown the inside of the Gruuthusemuseum, The City Palace of the Lords of Gruuthuse, which has been closed since 2014 for renovation and restoration.

Gruuthusemuseum is a museum of applied arts located in the medieval Gruuthuse. The collection ranges from the 15th to the 19th century.

Finally, Queen Mathilde spoke with representatives of hotel and catering businesses, which are severely affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Fashionable Belgian Queen Mathilde wears a shirt dress with a blue-green print by Natan with a matching mouth mask. Her earrings are from Zara.

The Queen completed the look with nude clutch and pumps.
