Queen Margrethe 80th Birthday


Today is April 16 and Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark celebrates her 80th birthday.

The Danish Royal House announced on March 12, 2020 that “in light of the spread of COVID-19 and the consequences for society Queen Margrethe 80th birthday celebrations were officially cancelled”.

However, The Queen has received digital greetings and new photos of Her Majesty has been released so we’re taking a look at “Queen Margrethe 80th Birthday”.

Wake-up call at Fredensborg Castle

Queen Margrethe of Denmark was woken up by her staff at Fredensborg Castle singing the song “In Denmark I was Born I have a home”. The Queen thanked them for the song.

The original plans of friends and family to wake her up by singing outside her window were cancelled due to the Coronavirus.

Video Greeting From Europe’s Royal Families

A number of Europe’s royal family members surprised Her Majesty The Queen with a video greeting on the occasion of her birthday.

Though Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses could not be present to celebrate The Queen in Denmark as otherwise planned, all nevertheless wanted to delight Her Majesty with personal congratulations.

Here are excerpts from the many greetings that The Queen has just seen from Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden.

Queen Margrethe is often referred to as “Aunt Daisy.”

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden wore a Daisy Brooch in honor of Queen Margrethe.

Special Greeting Post from Kungahuset

The Swedish cousins dedicated a special post on their social channels to celebrate Queen Margrethe.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Margrethe are first cousins and Her Majesty is Prince Carl Philippe’s godmother.

Video Message from Grandchildren

While they are unable to be with their Grandmother, Queen Margrethe on her birthday, all of her grandchildren recorded a video message wishing her a happy birthday.

The Queen has eight grandchildren, all born at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen:

  • Crown Prince Frederik married to Mary Donaldson on 14 May 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral, Copenhagen. The couple have four children:
    • Prince Christian (born 15 October 2005)
    • Princess Isabella (born 21 April 2007)
    • Prince Vincent (born 8 January 2011)
    • Princess Josephine (born 8 January 2011)
  • Prince Joachim was first married to Alexandra Manley on 18 November 1995 at Frederiksborg Palace Church, Hillerød. They divorced on 8 April 2005. He was married secondly to Marie Cavallier on 24 May 2008 at Møgeltønder Church, Møgeltønder. Joachim has four children, three sons and one daughter:
    • Prince Nikolai (born 28 August 1999)
    • Prince Felix (born 22 July 2002)
    • Prince Henrik (born 4 May 2009)
    • Princess Athena (born 24 January 2012)

Denmark sings for the Queen

At noon, Danes around the country sang songs for Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

The initiative was taken by Kim Bruhn, who had invited the Danes to the Facebook group “Denmark sings for the Queen” Danish: “Danmark synger for Dronningen”.

About 180,000 had signed up for the celebration beforehand.

The Majesty witnessed the community song from Fredensborg Castle.

Queen Margrethe is wearing her Diamond Daisy Brooch.
