Princess Margaret


Princess Margaret Rose was the beloved only sister of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Princess was born on 21 August 1930 at Glamis Castle in Scotland as the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

When Margaret was young, she fell in love with Captain Peter Townsend, a divorced man. In 1953, Towsend proposed to the Princess. She eventually abandoned her plans with him.

Princess Margaret’s Wedding

On 6 May 1960, Princess Margaret married the photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones. In 1961, Margaret’s husband was created Earl of Snowdon.

The Countess and the Earl of Snowdon had two children:

  • Lady Sarah Chatto, born 1 May 1964.

Princess Margaret’s Last Years

The Princess’s later life was marred by illness and disability. She died in the King Edward VII’s Hospital, London, on 9 February 2002 at the age of 71.

Princess Margaret funeral was held on 15 February 2002, the 50th anniversary of her father’s funeral.
