PRINCESS MAKO ATTENDED CEREMONY TO COMMEMORATE EMPEROR SHOWA

On January 7, Princess Mako of Akishino attended a ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of Emperor Showa’s death at Emperor Showa’s Mausoleum at Musashi Imperial Graveyard in in Nagabusa-machi, Hachioji, Tokyo.

Hirohito, Emperor Shōwa, 124th Emperor of Japan, died on 7 January 1989 and was succeeded by his son Akihito.

In Japan, reigning emperors are known only as “The Emperor”. Hirohito is now referred to primarily by his posthumous name, Shōwa, which is the name of the era coinciding with his reign; for this reason, he is also known as the Shōwa Emperor or Emperor Shōwa.

Other members of the Imperial Family also attended rituals at The Three Palace Sanctuaries in the precincts of the Tokyo Imperial Palace to mark the anniversary of the Emperor’s death.
