Naruhito, became Emperor of Japan on May 1, the day after his father, Emperor Akihito, abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne.

Ceremony of the Enthronement of Emperor Naruhito
The Enthronement Ceremony (Sokuirei-Seiden-no-gi) that marks the accession of Emperor Naruhito to the Chrysanthemum Throne will take place at The Tokyo Imperial Palace on October 22, 2019.

The ceremony will be held in the Seiden-Matsu-no-Ma (State Room), with the Emperor ascending to the 6.5-meter-high throne, known as The Takamikura.
During the 30 minutes ceremony, the Emperor declares his enthronement, and then representatives from Japan and abroad offer congratulations for His Majesty’s accession.
Emperor Naruhito will be accompanied by his wife Empress Masako. She will be seated on a throne platform known as The Michōdai (Throne of Her Majesty the Empress). This throne is 5.3-meter-high.

The Takamikura and The Michōdai.
For his enthronement, Emperor Naruhito will wear a dark orange robe called “Korozen no goho” only worn by Emperors on special occasions.
The emperor will stand and deliver a speech in front of members of foreign royal families and national leaders.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will give a congratulations speech and lead three banzai cheers “long live the Emperor”.
Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko are not expected to attend the ceremony.

The Parade of the Emperor and Empress (The Imperial Procession by MotoCar) scheduled for Tuesday, October 22 has been postponed until Sunday, November 10.

Tea Party at The Akasaka Imperial Residence
In the afternoon, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will invite royals to The Akasaka Imperial Residence for a tea party.
The Akasaka Imperial Residence is where Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako reside with their daughter Princess Aiko, and is located within the grounds of the Akasaka Estate.
