Her Majesty Queen Sonja was born on 4 July 1937 at Red Cross Clinic in Oslo, as Sonja Haraldsen daughter of Dagny Ulrichsen (1898-1994) and Karl August Haraldsen (1889-1959).

Miss Haraldsen received a diploma in dressmaking and tailoring at the Oslo Vocational School, and went on to receive a diploma from École Professionelle des Jeunes Filles in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Sonja first met Crown Prince Harald in 1959. It was not until nine years later, that Miss Haraldsen and the Crown Prince were given permission to marry.Embed from Getty Images

Miss Haraldsen married the then Crown Prince Harald of Norway on 29 August 1968, at Oslo Domkirke.

The couple has two children:
- Princess Märtha Louise, born on 22 September 1971 at The National Hospital in Oslo.
- Crown Prince Haakon, born on 20 July 1973 at The National Hospital, The Oslo University Hospital in Oslo .
