MEET THE ROYAL: QUEEN SONJA OF NORWAY

Her Majesty Queen Sonja was born on 4 July 1937 at Red Cross Clinic in Oslo, as Sonja Haraldsen daughter of Dagny Ulrichsen (1898-1994) and Karl August Haraldsen (1889-1959).

Sonja Haraldsen had three older siblings Haakon Haraldsen (1921–2016), Gry Henriksen (1924–1971) and Karl Herman Haraldsen (1929–1936)

Miss Haraldsen received a diploma in dressmaking and tailoring at the Oslo Vocational School, and went on to receive a diploma from École Professionelle des Jeunes Filles in Lausanne, Switzerland.



Sonja first met Crown Prince Harald in 1959. It was not until nine years later, that Miss Haraldsen and the Crown Prince were given permission to marry.

The couple became engaged on 19 March 1968.

Miss Haraldsen married the then Crown Prince Harald of Norway on 29 August 1968, at Oslo Domkirke.

She thus acquired the style of Royal Highness and the title of Crown Princess of Norway.

After the ceremony, the royal couple and King Olav V salute the crowd from the balcony of the Royal Palace,



The couple has two children:

  • Princess Märtha Louise, born on 22 September 1971 at The National Hospital in Oslo.
  • Crown Prince Haakon, born on 20 July 1973 at The National Hospital, The Oslo University Hospital in Oslo .

When King Harald V ascended to the Throne upon the death of his father King Olav on 17 January 1991, Queen Sonja became Norway’s first Queen Consort in 52 years.

Since his accession, Queen Sonja has accompanied the King to the formal opening of the autumn session of the Storting and the reading of the Speech from the Throne.

Her Majesty Queen Sonja is a longtime avid photographer and has a keen interest in art. She is a printmaker, and held exhibitions with artists Kjell Nupen and Ørnulf Opdahl in 2011 and 2013. She established The Queen Sonja Nordic Art Award in 2011.

Queen Sonja is the doting grandmother of five grandchildren:

The daughters of Princess Märtha Louise and her ex-husband Ari Behn (1972 -2019)

  • Maud Angelica Behn, born 29 April 2003.
  • Leah Isadora Behn, born 8 April 2005.
  • Emma Tallulah Behn, born 29 September 2008.

Her Majesty is also the step-grandmother of Marius Borg Høiby born on 13 January 1997, son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship.
